Mira’s Move-Your-Butt Mixed Tape

IMG_2473I love to stay active and get my body moving every day, but I still need ways to get motivated other than pure willpower most days.

MUSIC is always something that gives me that extra boost and keeps me going when I work out. Whether I’m on my morning walk or doing a strength training sesh in my lounge room, if I’ve got the right tunes I can push myself harder and further and faster, and I finish my work out in the best mood!

On my power walk, I’ve been listening to random tunes and getting to know my own collection, or I tune into Triple J on their iPhone app (http://www.abc.net.au/triplej/iphone/). While at home and boogying my little butt off (literally), I’ve got a special playlist on Spotify (https://www.spotify.com/au/) that I’m constantly updating. If you haven’t tried Spotify, it’s got most songs ever released on there, imports the music you already have and is free, but still gives profits to the artists. You can share music with friends and see what they are listening to, too. If you can afford premium, do it! That way you can take the music with you on your iPhone and don’t have to listen to ads. I’m addicted to it!

Diane Young – Vampire Weekend

I always put this song on first when I do some strength training to warm up. It’s a great song to star-jump to (for the whole song) because it makes me smile and giggle like a kid while I’m jumping around. It feels even more fun when you aren’t the only one jumping around and grinning like a idiot, too.

I Know What I Am – Band of Skulls

I discovered very recently that this is a GREAT song to walk to. The steady beat and the sexy bass sound fantastic, and the lyrics are empowering, which is what you need when you don’t feel motivated. Turn it up loud and it pushes you to walk fast and hard and makes you feel really tough.

Gravity’s Rainbow – Klaxons

This song was one I used to CRANK, back in my gym days, on the cross trainer/elliptical machine and it really pushed me faster faster FASTER! I love it!

Let’s Dance to Joy Division – The Wombats

Discovered completely by accident, this song came on and my boyfriend and I found it to be a great one for a tai-bo-style workout. In the verses we punch the air in front of us on the beat with alternating arms, and in the chorus we do this at double-speed. The challenge is to do it for the whole song, keeping your arms up high, and your arms will BURN!

Reductionist – Bluejuice

Bluejuice always make me happy, they are one of my favourite bands to see live because they know how to get the whole crowd going. This song is one of the best ones to pump me up and get me moving, be it walking, strength training or just dancing around the lounge room.

Shuffle – Bombay Bicycle Club

I love to start my morning walk with this because it puts me in such a good mood and makes me breathe deeply and smile. It just works so well with the sunrise.
